Boy in the Striped pyjamas
This is a fictional book about a nine year old named Bruno that is forced to move out of his big house to a place he thinks is called "Out-With", which is actually Auschwitz. His father, a S.S. officer, had been promoted to commandant of the camp. After being told not to explore anywhere past the backyard, Bruno decided to anyway. He found a barb wire fence with a boy sitting on the other side; his name was Shmuel . They quickly became friends, and Bruno started to question his father's work. One day, Shmuel's father goes missing, and Bruno digs under the fence and puts on the "pyjamas" that the people inside the camp wear. While looking for Shumel's father, Bruno and Shmuel got sucked into a crowd of people that were being taken to gas chambers. Bruno believed that they were just getting out of the rain. They were told to undress, and that they were going to take a shower. Bruno grabbed Shmuel's hand, not knowing what was about to happen; they were then gassed. The loss of his son led to the commandant resigning, realizing what evil he had truly been doing.
A Doctor's Eyewitness Account
This non-fiction book was written by Miklós Nyiszli, a Jewish doctor. Dr. Mengele , also know in Auschwitz as "The Angel of Death", chose Miklos personally to help him conduct his evil experiments in 1944. Miklos helped reluctantly, but in the end, it saved his life. He participated in several medical experiments under Dr. Mengele, including the dissection of twins. With his impressive work on examining the dead, he was soon promoted to head of autopsies. With his high status, he was able to save his wife and daughter by bribing an S.S. officer. Mengele began to really like Miklos, but Miklos constantly worried about being executed to prevent him from telling anyone of the horrific experiments. The camp was liberated in 1945 , and Miklos survived with the rest of his family . Many ask to this day, " Was his job a blessing? Or was it curse he would live with for the rest of his life ?"
